Urban Mountain Biking

There may be some days where you can't get out and go mountain biking. In this case, explore urban mountain biking! It's a great way to get outside and improve your trail skills, without a trail! Biking in the city doesn't have to be boring. Look for ordinary objects, such as ramps and stairs that can be turned into a fun mountain biking challenge!

Getting Started

Choose the right bike:

Mountain bikes work great for urban riding. BMX is another option, but that's a whole other discussion. Make sure your bike is working smoothly and is capable, as riding on hard pavement can be hard on the bike.

Safety

Safety is always the important in mountain biking. A helmet is a must - gloves or pads are also great to protect against falls and skids. If you plan to ride at night, install reflectors and consider buying a bike light

Look before you ride

As always, be familiar with a feature before your ride it. Check the takeoff, landing, hazards, and any other obstacles that may cause harm. Watch for people and don't ride features when near them.

Tune up your skills

Learn skills that will make urban biking more fun, as well as benefit you on the mountain bike trails. Learn how to bunny hop, wheelies, manuals, and track stands.

Features to look for

Anything in the city can be fun, but here are some features that are great for riding that are common in most urban settings:
  • Ramps - great for jumping
  • Curbs - practice your balance
  • Stairs - one of my favorite features
