The problem

Previously my bike had plastic pedals that had no grip. My feet would constantly be slipping off while jumping and climbing. So I bought new ones. The new ones were hollow metal with screws to provide more traction.

Did it work?

Right away I noticed a dramatic difference. On the climb up my feet stayed in place, making for a more efficient climb. But the biggest difference was on the downhill. My feet stayed locked to the pedals during the entire descent. No matter how big the berm or jump, my feet stayed still. It helped me jump higher and farther.

Which Pedals should I buy?

It depends on personal preference. The first decision is clipless or flat. Clipless pedals, despite the name, require special shoes to clip into the pedals while flats don't. If you're getting flats, any pedal with screws will work. Some things to pay attention to are weight and color. If you're getting clipless, you have to select which kind of clip you want.
