Mastering MTB Photography - Using a Phone

Interested in mountain bike photography, but don't have a camera? Don't worry, a great tool for photography is sitting right in your pocket - your phone.

Gear

The only necessary gear for photography is your phone. However, there are some nice things to have. The most important being a tripod. You don't need a large one, there are many that are foldable and fit right in your backpack.

Camera Settings

Before you begin, there are certain settings you can apply to make the most of the shot. First, set your camera to the highest resolution to capture the fine details. Next, enable your gridlines to ensure correct framing. Finally, turn on HDR to allow a wider range of light and shadows.

Use the Rule of Thirds

Use the gridlines to position objects for the most visual appeal. Use natural objects and positions to guide your shot. For example, use a tree or the edge of a berm.

Freezing the Action

For this you have two options: freezing a video or using burst shots. Burst shots take multiple pictures at once, then you can go back and select the best frames. If you use video, then you can go back and export certain frames.

Editing

You can use editing apps to enhance your photo, such as by changing the lighting or colors.
